Day 1 – LOST

by Devon on June 24, 2011

Hey Everybody!
I said I was going to disconnect from social media while on this trip, well I guess I’m a liar… Every couple days (maybe every day), I’ll update the old blog with a post from Europe while we are here. This is Day 1, and we are lost.

Well not really lost as much as shocked, confused, and a little dizzy. We arrived running on little sleep, into a country where we do not speak the language, to a city that moves as fast as New York. It was a bit overwhelming for 10am after 15 hours of traveling. Not to mention we have the word “TOURIST” emblazoned on our foreheads, so the swindling has already begun.

After arriving at our hotel at 10am, we dropped off our bags and hit the streets in search of some food, a place to relax, and maybe a little sight seeing before check in at 2pm. After a 10 minute walk, we happened upon a newstand selling open top bus tours, and thought it would be a fantastic way to get our bearings and see a bit of Roma. Not the case for us though, after buying the tickets we could find the damned bus stop! We saw the buses, but never the stops. We’ll push this tour out to Sunday/Monday.

Eventually, after much sweat and cursing, we settled down to lunch at a small cafe. Salame e Burrata for me, and a Tacchino e mozzarella for Shana, a couple of waters, and a good long sit down. Exactly what we needed.

Shortly after, we decided to start heading back to the hotel, wandering through the streets hoping to find something familiar to guide our way back. As you know, I’m really AWESOME with directions, so this wasn’t difficult for me or anything. Thankfully Shana has a better sense than I do! We arrived back at the hotel about 10 minutes later, showered, and slept (we also set an alarm, so we could get up and out for dinner and hopefully curb any jetlag that we may face). The sweet embrace of a bed has never before felt so heavenly.

After our short coma, we woke up, got ready, and hit the streets for a night of exploring. Walking from our hotel, we decided to stay on the Vatican City side of the river, and began making our way toward the Castle of Sant Angelo. We walked through a swap meet, around some street performers, and eventually made our way down to a small restaurant that sat on the river.

Good food, good wine, and eventually some awesome live music (American classic rock performed by middle aged italian guys), we hit the jackpot and finally we felt that this was the vacation we wanted. A little buzz going from the wine, we decide to head back to the hotel to try and grab some more shut eye and get our bodies used to the time change. Goodnight!

Almost forgot to mention, there was somebody more lost than us! An aztec warrior that we found in front of the Castle Sant Angelo… yup, definitely more lost.
