Gravity
I recently got an invite to join a new Social Media/Forum type website called Gravity. I was excited when I read the about page, “Gravity connects you with people you should know and should be talking to because they share your passions.” So more so than Facebook, Gravity will help me connect with people I don’t already know in the vast world of the internet. This is a GREAT networking tool, so if you are having trouble in that department, I suggest you take a gander at Gravity.
Why is this a GREAT networking tool you ask? Gravity rewards its users. The geniuses at Gravity realized that they needed something that would get users to keep using, rather than just switching back to the old failsafe of Facebook, so they implemented a Badge system. Just like the cub scouts and girl scouts, Gravity users unlock “hidden” badges, depending on how they are using the site. Example of the badges I have unlocked:
- Photogenic- I shared a profile pic
- New kid on the block- I registered/confirmed my account
- Icebreaker- I introduced myself to the community
- Two-to-Tango- I replied to a post
- Remora Fish- Someone is “Orbiting” (following) one of my posts.
And with each new badge, you get a very clever explanation of how you got it. Take the “Two-to-Tango” badge:
It’s always a little disconcerting when you see people talking to themselves at the bus stop. They’re generally either crazy or have bluetooth. Either way, they’re socially awkward. When you reply to someone, it’s a nice way of saying, “Talking to yourself is sort of weird. I’m here to help.” You’re a lovely person for doing it. You deserve a badge.
These badges even have levels within them, so the more you participate, the higher you rank. What an awesome way to encourage people to participate on your site!
Everyone head over to www.gravity.com and sign up for your chance to play.
Also, what are your tips and tricks for getting people to participate on your site? Chris Brogan employed an interesting tactic today. Leave your comments below, and I promise to send you a really cool badge!
